Discreet's smoke 6/Tezro
Rocks in the Midwest
Fueled by the excitement that Discreet's
Exploration Road Show generated in Dallas in November, I/O
Partners decided to take to the road as well to showcase Discreet's
smoke 6 on SGI's newest workstation, Tezro. The Midwest
cities toured included St. Louis, Minneapolis and Kansas City.
The reaction mirrored the Dallas audience response. This combo
Tony Mills, fire artist at Hi-Wire in Minneapolis said, "The
issue of resolution co-existence has been a holy grail of
sorts for so long, it is satisfying to see it so thoroughly
implemented in Discreet's high-end products. There's lots
of new functionality! I especially like the new Rotospline
toolset and the addition of inferno's Color Warper to smoke/fire.
Plus the new processor is just so sexy looking! Kudos all
Joy Moeller co-owner of Liquid9, one of the hottest new creative
media boutiques in Kansas City commented, " I really loved
the way the Soft Edits functioned worked and can see the use
for it in a creative-intensive session. The ability to have
uncommitted edits, transitions and speed changes ready when
the decision is made is extremely powerful and will give the
editor the advantage of speed so necessary in that type of
Marcus Claudson of The Spark Agency, which is a full service
production company in St. Louis, stated, " We really liked
the fact that this latest version of smoke added a quite a
few intriguing features all at once. The independence from
resolution is a big plus and will provide much more freedom
inside the edit bay. Also, The Multi-Master Editor will allow
you to distribute your final product in many formats from
a single system. This is a great system. Plus, I can imagine
the displacement mapping feature and motion blur controls
really coming in handy."
Tim McGovern of Metro Productions in Kansas City added, "We
were one of the first post houses in the Midwest to own a
smoke so we have seen it from the beginning. This latest version
really stands out because of the freedom from resolution features.
It's great that you can now edit multiple resolutions on a
single timeline and output the master to any format. Also,
the Colour Warper feature was previously only available in
Discreet's high-end compositing systems of flame and inferno
and now it's gracing smoke 6."
